This post is a little different than what I normally do! I’ve had a lot of questions lately about the behind the scenes aspects of blogging so I wanted to make a huge post and answer those questions for everyone to see! It’ll be a great way for a lot of people to get the answers they’ve wanted as well.
I’ll touch on a few topics including: how I take photographs, what I do to grow my following, and how I do collaborations with companies! These are some of my most asked questions and I figured it would be a great post to write even if you don’t have these questions now. I hope you find these answers/tips helpful!
1. Do you use third parties to grow likes/followers?
No no no a thousand times no! First of all, I 100% think that’s inorganic and not a way to get followers that actually want to interact with you. Secondly, I don’t want someone to have access to any of my accounts because that is how you get hacked. The third reason is that Instagram can (and most likely will) flag your account because they think you’re a bot.
This is the same concept behind the follow/unfollow method and why your account may be temporarily blocked from liking or commenting on photos. That being said, Instagram is really extra with this feature. Sometimes I’m blocked when merely liking/replying to comments on my own posts!!
2. Do you take pics with a camera or an iPhone?
I have not purchased a camera yet! I felt like I had to feel really established with where I was before I invested. I do intend to purchase one soon though (so drop your recommendations below!!)! I solely use my iPhone to take my blog and Instagram photos. Portrait mode is killer on the iPhone 8 Plus and even without it the photos still turn out pretty nicely.
I use a tripod to take my full body photos and even close-ups in my room because it allows me to be hands free! I have a full blog post about how I take photos with my tripod linked (here).
3. How do you come up with Instagram captions?
I seriously just speak from the heart. You guys know I’m pretty open when it comes to talking about my life/struggles I’m having. I generally talk about something that happened that day/week and then also discuss what is happening in the photo. I feel like this is a solid method for me but honestly everyone and every page is different!
I also generally don’t use hashtags that much anymore but I 100% used to and I seriously think that helped me grow my following. I also have a blog post about that as well and I’ll link it (here)!
4. How did you get accepted to LIKEtoKNOW.it?
Well I applied once when I first really started pursuing my blog/IG in January but they often say how you need to have an established account that’s been active (with lovely content) for about four months before they’ll even consider you. I got denied the first time! Then around April/March, my friend Bree from class said she had been on the platform and could send me a referral link.
I applied using that link and got accepted (on International Women’s Day I might add)! I am 100% willing to send you a referral link by the way (after I look over your feed and blog of course to make sure I’m sure you’ll have the best opportunity to get accepted) and even give you tips on how to up your IG/Blog game to get accepted.
5. How do you get collaborations with certain companies?
Well normally they reach out to me which is great but often times I’ll also reach out to them! A lot of times companies would love to work with you, they just haven’t seen your content yet. Reaching out is a great way to show up where they are and present yourself to them!
I use a media kit that I made using Canva/Photoshop and it makes my life so much easier because all I have to do is update my stats every time I send it out! I also use an email template that I alter for each company and situation.
I also use a few influencer marketing platforms which I will do an entire separate post on!
6. How do you find group giveaways/do they work?
I feel like these questions make me seem lazy because people always seem to find me for giveaways! I have a lovely group of bloggers that I interact with often and we generally reach out to each other when other people reach out to us about them. It’s all about making connections!
I have seen that giveaways do really work! I generally get more followers when doing them with other bloggers than with companies, but I like doing them with companies because I feel like it benefits you guys more and makes the steps easier. I have done one large loop giveaway with a second giveaway page and saw a lot of success with it!
7. How do you get your highlight covers?
I made some when they FIRST became a thing with little logos but I find I like it better with words on it. I use an app called Rhonna which is $1.99 at the app store but every time I want to change them up I use it! I say that it’s worth it. I’m sure there are other ways to create them but this was just seemed easiest (work smart not hard y’all).
I wasn’t sure if people actually looked at story highlights (because personally I don’t even think to look at them) but I took a poll and a large amount of the people that responded do watch them (about 52% of people who voted). This is definitely a worthy investment!
8. How do you get followers?
This is the BIGGEST question that I am asked. I don’t use the follow/unfollow method because it seems inauthentic and wrong. I do engage, engage, engage! It’s a slow process but it will 100% be worth it. I did a lot of giveaways in a row this summer and that is what bumped me up to 10K so I say engaging through hashtag searches and doing giveaways with other bloggers will get you to where you want to be!
I hope these answered your questions and were able to help you see the behind the scene actions that most bloggers and myself use on the daily! These are great tips that I’ve seen work through my own experience and that I hope will work for you as well!
