It’s been literally ages since I’ve written a DIY post! I apologize for this because I realized after asking some Instagram questions that those are something you guys love. This next one kind of just happened one day! I just moved in to my apartment at the beginning of January and have been trying to spruce up my space a bit.
I was looking around on Pinterest for some home decor inspiration. That gave me the idea to try and create some easy DIY projects! While browsing, I saw so many cute fabric covered cork boards online but didn’t want to spend the $50 price tag for one.
I’ve done easy DIYs for cork boards before, but those times the entire cork board was covered! This time I knew I just wanted to go the painting route. I’m all about easy DIY decor because it’s a fast way to change up your space and on a budget too! I was able to get everything I needed for this project for UNDER $15!
Easy DIY Gold Framed Cork Board
This home DIY decor project is only 5 steps and that INCLUDES taping your cork board which takes less than 5 minutes. This easy DIY also requires ONLY 4 MATERIALS! I was so excited to be able to give you guys more easy DIY decor ideas especially affordable ones. Hope you love this one!
Steps:
1. Grab your supplies:
For my supplies, I kind of decided what I needed on a whim! I was having a bad day and I search for DIY decorating ideas when I’m sad (LOL). For this cork board transformation, I knew I would need a few basic supplies.
First, I knew I’d need painter’s tape. That would be so I wouldn’t get paint on my frame and vice versa. I also needed the cork board obviously (but that’s kind of self-explanatory). This one I found at Target for just $8!
Second, I knew I wanted my cork board to be white and gold. This would fit with my desk because I have golds throughout. I knew I wanted my DIY cork board to go on the wall above my desk so that was my reasoning behind this!
For the gold paint, I wanted to make sure it was really pigmented. My gold paint was a bit more expensive at $2.49, but the white paint is just .99¢ and makes up for it! You MAY be able to find some gold for cheaper elsewhere, but all these items were from Target so you can just grab them in your haul.
The last item you’ll need is paint brushes! When I moved to Florida I really thought, “Oh I’m working full-time and blogging when will I have time to CRAFT.” Well it’s been three weeks and we see how that went. I had to buy some new ones, but they were only $2.99! Shop the supplies below the photos:

2. Tape around the edge of the cork board:
This next step is to ensure that you don’t get paint all over the cork part of the cork board. You’re going to paint the frame first in case there ARE any slip ups with paint. I just purchased regular blue painter’s tape because it’s thin and comes off so easily!
3. Paint the frame gold:
This step is pretty self-explanatory. You’re going to paint the frame with the gold paint! Or, any color you want because this is YOUR cork board after all. I linked a couple other metallic paints above in case you wanted to check those out too.
For this step, I made sure to do PLENTY of coats. I started off doing about three coats of gold paint before lunch then left it to dry for a couple hours. This proved to be enough time for it to dry evenly! If it looks too light, DON’T WORRY. It’ll look pretty pale until it dries all the way but it’s pretty vibrant.
4. Paint the inside white:
Again, this one is pretty self-explanatory! You’re now going to paint the cork part white. I think this is easier than trying to mod podge fabric on (which I actually considered) because it’s faster, cheaper, and easier!
I started off with a couple coats and I thought that would be fine. Well, a few hours went by and I honestly wasn’t happy with how patchy it looked! This was after I’d already hung it up. I ended up adding a couple more coats with it mounted! It looks A LOT better now. Use your best judgement!
5. Hang it on the wall:
I added this on as a step because I figured this was also an important step! The cork board that I purchased, and the one I linked, comes with it’s own mounting materials. That being said, I did not like them. They were nails and the nails didn’t like to stay in my wall.
I decided to just use Command Strips! They’re easier to your wall, cheap, and can easily be removed if you need to re-adjust. You also don’t have to measure as much because you can just stick the cork board to the wall. I’ve linked some options below:

And there you have it! Your lovely DIY Cork Board is FINISHED! It should be super cute and look exactly like the more expensive versions. I got my inspiration from the one below and as you can see ours looks PRETTY DARN CLOSE! The one below is $59.99 and you can shop it (here) if you prefer!

I added little mementos from my loved ones (i.e. the “You Are One Cool Lady” card and the other card in the bottom right hand corner)! I also added some photos of quotes I love like “Clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them” -Marc Jacobs.

If you already have a cork board and you aren’t in the market for one, this is a great easy DIY idea for gifts! If you friend has a birthday coming up, OR you need an anniversary gift, this is the DIY for you!
I loved this project so much that I’m thinking of trying to add in more easy DIY decor for your bedroom! That, or sticking close to that theme with easy DIY decorations for the home in general. I hope you loved this post an are inspired to try it out for yourself!
