Coming back to you with another work wear post! Trying to create new looks every day for work is a difficult task. This post is going to show you how to create a fall/winter business casual capsule wardrobe! I made one a few months back that can also work for just general work wear (that you can read here), but this will be specifically tailored to the colder months.
Whenever I ask what y’all are looking for on my Instagram story polls, I ALWAYS get work wear requests! This post will show you all the capsule wardrobe essentials you could want, tips on building a business casual capsule wardrobe, and at the end I’ll even add in a capsule wardrobe checklist! This is all to help you look the best, and save the most on work wear for the cooler temps.
How to Create a Fall/Winter Business Casual Capsule Wardrobe
For this business casual capsule wardrobe post, I knew I wanted to make all of the clothes look cohesive. This is the first way that you’re really able to create looks that you can easily mix and match! In this capsule closet, I used brown, grey, tan, black, and rust as the main colors throughout this collection.
These are also colors that I feel really SCREAM fall and that can move into winter easily too! They’re also colors that I have throughout my own personal wardrobe that I style often. I wouldn’t just throw random things at you that I didn’t love myself too!
For this post I decided to round up 15 clothing items and 9 accessories that encompass all the capsule wardrobe essentials you could ever need. Everything is from H&M (like last time) mostly because they have flatlays of photos that are easy to mock up like this! Not a fan of shopping there? I have a post that shows you Where to Shop for Affordable Work Wear that you can check out too!
Shop All of These Items Below
Jackets + Outerwear:
For jackets and outerwear, I wanted to draw on some classic styles and silhouettes as well as some fashion pieces too! Teddy coats are all the rage right now as well as this deep rust color! This was the first outerwear piece I chose and it did not disappoint. I love how large the lapels are too!
My second outerwear choice was this plaid blazer! I am a massive lover of blazers in general (they make me feel powerful) and I also love plaid. This plaid was unique because it had yellow and rust undertones that match back to a variety of items in this collection!
The next blazer is a neutral grey color that works in almost any season with almost any garment. I think the wide belt on it offers a fun way to cinch it (if worn with a skirt) OR ca be left off when worn open with belted pants! This grey is also a color that can just work with any others and is a staple regardless of if it’s fall or winter.
The last outerwear piece is this yellow cardigan! It’s not technically outerwear I guess, but it fits in this category the most. I am a strong believer that everyone needs a good cardigan in their closet! This shade of mustard yellow pops with any outfit and brings needed color to any look.
Tops + Dresses:
When it came to tops and dresses, I also knew I wanted to go with classic styles that have a fun twist! This black top is a neutral color, but stands out because of the ruffles. That’s something I always look for in work wear pieces! I want my clothes to be subtle in one way, but unique in another.
This yellow top is the same! It’s a traditional wrap blouse, but in a fun fashion color that really stands out during this time of year. I generally try to find blouses that can work with jeans or a skirt so I can mix it up depending on the day! I love that the wrap waist on this one gives it a little bit of a ruffle.
I also wanted to throw in a couple of camis too! I personally always try to keep a few in my closet. The main reason is that Georgia is usually hot even in the “fall” and “winter.” I have a classic black lace one in my closet right now and I wear it so often! It’s perfect under a cardigan or a blazer. I also wanted to show a fashion color too!
Dresses are my go to option when it comes to business casual. They’re easier (you only have to find ONE piece of clothing), quick to steam out or iron, and make you look professional too! I chose this mustard yellow shirtdress and a black ponte dress that can be worn year round!
Skirts + Pants:
Pants and skirts are obviously a must in any work wear wardrobe! These are no exception to that. I wanted to round up six that you could mix and match in order to give you the most amount of options! I personally love a classic mini skirt in the fall because they can be easily styled with over the knee boots.
In this case, I chose this lovely plaid mini skirt, and a gorgeous rust suede mini skirt! I think both of these offer a fun flair that make the cooler months more fun. The plaid mini skirt matches back perfectly to the plaid blazer I showed above! The rust one matches back with the teddy coat and rust cami top.
If you know anything about me, you KNOW I gotta have a midi skirt in my capsule wardrobe. I wear midi skirts year round and generally at LEAST once a week to work. They are a more modest option for a skirt and that’s what makes me like them! I chose a yellow pull-on midi skirt for this collection because it matches back to so many things in this collection.
When it comes to pants, I knew I wanted to have two solid options. I love a classic tie waist pant and that’s why I chose this black pair of pants! I think these are a great option because they’re high waisted. You can belt them with the belt they came with, or with a different one (like the one I have above)!
The second pair of pants I added was a classic blue jean! I work in a more business casual office so I’m allowed to wear tasteful jeans. This pair is one that I feel like works well with black and yellow so it fit really well into this capsule wardrobe! I made sure to add one without rips too so you can really dress them up.
Accessories + Shoes:
For accessories and shoes, I want to add a few classic pieces and mix in some new styles! I added a pair of black over the knee boots because they work so well with mini skirts. They also look great worn over jeans too! These have a nice heel to them that isn’t too high, but still gives you a little added height.
I threw in a neutral heel that is in a nude color because this is a shoe that can work no matter what you’re wearing! I have a classic block heel from Target that I wear which has a similar color. I also wanted to mix it up a little and add a really popular fall 2019 trend which is snakeskin! This pair is super cute and works with almost any outfit.
When it comes to bags, I think everyone needs just one black tote bag! My friend calls it my “mom bag” even though I’m not a mom. I guess it’s accurate though because I always keep band-aids and snacks in there! Regardless, I love it because I can fit my laptop in it as well as anything else I need.
To add yellow into the mix, I chose this mustard headband and crossbody bag! I love a general crossbody and one in this fashion color I love it even more. I think this is great because you can pair it with this rust color and they’re the perfect complements. It also elevates an all black outfit!
The remaining accessories are the yellow/black scarf set, the black belt, and the statement earrings! I love a good neck scarf. This set fit too perfectly into my capsule wardrobe too! The patterned yellow one can be mixed and matched with other patterns within the collection, and the black can be used to neutralize any look.
I think every woman needs a classic black belt in her closet! I had one in my last capsule wardrobe post and it could just be the same one carried through. I also thought a good statement earring works well too! This pair is gold which will match the metal in the belt and juts emphasize yellow in this collection even more.
How to Style Your Capsule Wardrobe
I wanted to also show how you can style your capsule wardrobe in various ways! This first group of outfits is blouses/tops. I showed two ways you can style the yellow blouse, and two where you can style the black one! This is just a couple ways you can wear each one, but I think they’re all chic and perfect for work.
I personally LOVE the all yellow look that, once worn, will look like it’s a dress. You’ll also see that I styled the over the knee boots here and honestly love how that look cam together. It’s very “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” inspired (if you haven’t watched this show yet you need to).
I also wanted to add in an all black look for the gal who maybe isn’t too excited to wear color every day! I feel very powerful when I wear black, but also feel like it can go a little morose. I added in this brighter color for the shoe to keep it a neutral look, but still show that you have a little pep in your step!
When it comes to blazers, I could not love an item of clothing more. My boyfriend asked me once what clothing item I feel best in and I hands down said a blazer! I feel so powerful when I wear one and I really enjoy that feeling that I can do anything. That’s why I chose the two blazers above!
The other thing I love about blazers is how versatile they are. You can wear them with any length of skirt, any type of pant, and they make any look seem more professional! As you can see, I chose this gorgeous plaid blazer that has a matching skirt (so many Clueless vibes with this one!!!!). I also picked a more neutral blazer that’s a nice grey.
My favorite look above is the plaid blazer with the yellow midi skirt! The way I would wear this would be an open blazer with a lace cami underneath. I would then belt the opened jacket and keep the cami tucked into the skirt! This will give such a chic and professional look, but also help you look more fashion forward.
Every gal needs a little black dress! This is almost identical to the one I featured in my last capsule wardrobe post, so if you got it last time, this is great news! I love a classic black ponte dress because they can work with literally anything. You can see above how many variations you can make!
The first look with the over the knee boots is what I’d imagine a day to night outfit would look like. If you have colder winters, throw on a gorgeous teddy coat and you’re ready to go! These coats have been a trend for over a year now and I don’t see them going away anytime soon. Be sure to snap one up now!
I also decided to give a more casual option with little black dresses too. If you’re more of a classic dresser, then the bottom left outfit choice is for you! It is simple with just a black tote bag (you guys know that’s my favorite) and a nude heel. If you have a more strict workplace, this is a safer option for you!
